Georg Philipp Telemann's Six Canonic Sonatas take on a new instrumental color in Lowell E. Shaw's arrangement for two horns, published by The Hornists' Nest as HN 70. First published in 1738, the original sonatas were intended for pairs of flutes, violins, or viols.
In a canon, one player begins a melodic line and the other follows with the same material after a delay. The resulting overlap makes both musicians responsible for the tune while also listening to the harmony and rhythm created between them. Across the six sonatas, contrasting fast and slow movements offer opportunities for both lively articulation and sustained phrasing.
For horn players, these duets provide an engaging way to work on matched style, pulse, balance, and intonation without a pianist. They can be used in lessons, shared practice, or a chamber program. This publication contains Shaw's two-horn adaptation, not the original flute or violin edition.
